NCIN enabled the MidAmerica Nazarene University School of Nursing and Health Science to recruit and retain more students from under-represented backgrounds in nursing. One NCIN scholar was a refugee who escaped the war-torn streets of Vietnam on a wooden fishing boat. The school implemented a comprehensive marketing strategy to enhance the diversity of its student body; it included advertisements and stories about the program in magazines, newsletters, and online publications, and on bill-boards. Still, word-of-mouth referrals continue to be the most effective recruitment tool. In later grant years, the school used student input to enhance the NCIN program and hired a faculty member dedicated to overseeing it.
